Churches made mosques

D.J. Kearney (Letters, 3 January) talks of the fact that the cathedral of Cordoba was once a mosque, forgetting that it was originally built as a church before the Islamic invasion of Spain. Similarly the Hagia Sophia, the Great Mosque of Damascus and many other examples in the lands conquered by Muslims, these were first built as churches before being turned into mosques. Today, the Islamic State is taking the further step of either completely demolishing churches or using them for secular purposes.
