Francis and Benedict meeting scheduled

18 March 2013

Pope Francis is to meet Benedict XVI, the Pope Emeritus, for a lunch on Saturday. The Vatican said Francis would travel by helicopter from the Vatican to the retired pope's temporary residence at Castel Gandolfo, as Benedict did three weeks ago.

The Vatican initially announced that a meeting would take place at the end of last week, but it was postponed.

Today Francis met President Cristina Kirchner of his native Argentina, with whom he frequently clashed when he was cardinal-archbishop of Buenos Aires.

They met at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where the cardinals stayed during conclaves, because the Vatican apartments are still being prepared. The Vatican said it did not plan to issue a statement regarding what was discussed between the two but describing the meeting as private and informal.

Ahead of tomorrow's inauguration Mass it was announced today that public transport in Rome will be free tomorrow. The Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi said this morning that the Gospel would be sung only in Greek at tomorrow's Mass, but he added: "Of Latin, there will be plenty."
