‘Pope deserves unconditional loyalty'18 March 2013
The Bishop of Shrewsbury has told Catholics to promise their obedience to the newly elected Pope Francis. In a pastoral letter released on Sunday Bishop Mark Davies urged Catholics to use the election of Pope Francis as an opportunity to renew their personal loyalty to the papacy.
He said: "In these past few days you may have heard many commentators telling us what a new Pope should be like and what he should do.
"No ‘job description' for a Pope is ever required. We place our faith in the promises of Christ, not confusing the giftedness of the man with the promises attached to the office of Peter." Meanwhile the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, Kieran Conry, called for a "day of joy" to celebrate the inauguration of Pope Francis' inauguration tomorrow. "Bake a cake for someone, ring your mother, give the children a treat, send a card to your priest, bring flowers home - do something to bring joy to someone and express the joy of the Church," he said.
