Dean resigns in Flannery protest

22 February 2013

A priest in the archdiocese of Dublin has stepped down as dean of the prominent Maynooth deanery in protest at the treatment of censured priest Fr Tony Flannery by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF).

Fr John Hassett, moderator of the parishes of Lucan, Esker and Adamstown, resigned from his role as dean of the Maynooth deanery, which is considered to be one of the most dynamic in Dublin, in protest at "the disrespectful and unjust treatment of Fr Tony Flannery".

Announcing his resignation to the 35-member deanery, Fr Hassett warned that Catholics were now living in a Church "where courage is silenced by fear".

Fr Flannery has been threatened with excommunication if he refuses to sign a document recanting his views on the priesthood, contraception and homosexuality.
