Belfast peacemaker to aid Anglicans18 February 2013
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has appointed a new Director of Reconciliation at Lambeth Palace to repair rifts within the Anglican Communion which have opened up over issues such as homosexuality and the ordination of women as bishops.
Canon David Porter's role will initially focus on the renewal of dialogue between the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, but will expand to cover areas of difference and conflict internationally.
Canon Porter has worked on peace-building projects on the Belfast-based Northern Ireland Civic Forum and has been the Canon Director for Reconciliation Ministry at Coventry Cathedral since 2008.
Announcing the appointment Archbishop Welby said: "It is essential that we work towards demonstrating ways of reducing destructive conflict in our world - and also to setting an example of how to manage conflict within the Church."
