US bishops act to protect definition of marriage in law

30 January 2013

The US bishops have taken legal action to register their support of two laws that define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The bishops' conference on Tuesday filed "amicus briefs" in the US Supreme Court in support of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8.

The Human Rights Commission, a gay rights group, is leading a campaign calling for the repeal of DOMA. Activists are also calling for Proposition 8 to be declared unconstitutional.

DOMA was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1996 and Proposition 8 was approved by voters in California in 2008.

The bishops also argued that invalidating Proposition 8's definition of marriage would have adverse consequences in other areas of law "pitting constitutional right squarely against constitutional right - for years to come".
