Archbishop says he is 'haunted' by abortion

25 January 2013

Marking the 40th anniversary of the Roe v Wade ruling by the US Supreme Court that legalised abortion, the Archbishop of Denver Samuel J Aquila, this week issued a pastoral letter in which he describes working as a hospital orderly during his time at college, and recalls being witness to "acts of unspeakable brutality" relating to abortion. The memory haunts him still, he says.

President Barack Obama this week issued a brief statement to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that struck down laws protecting unborn human life. He said: "On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we reaffirm its historic commitment to protect the health and reproductive freedom of women across this country and stand by its guiding principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters, and women should be able to make their own choices about their bodies and their health care."
