Church cancels abuse inquiry12 January 2013
The Catholic Church in Germany has terminated an independent inquiry into clerical sexual abuse.
The German Bishops' conference commissioned the inquiry in 2011 but has halted the investigation because it said it had lost faith in Professor Christian Pfeiffer, head of the Lower Saxony Criminological Research Institute, who led the project.
Professor Pfeiffer had accused the Church of obstructing his team's work and trying to control the research.
"The relationship of mutual trust between the bishops and the head of the institute has been destroyed," Bishop of Trier, Stephan Ackermann, said in a statement. "Trust is vital for such an extensive project dealing with such a sensitive issue."
The German Bishops' Conference said it would commission a new inquiry once it had selected a new partner.
