Lesley-Anne Knight to head Elders

7 January 2013

The former head of the Caritas network of Catholic charities, Lesley-Anne Knight, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the group of senior global leaders known as The Elders.

Dr Knight will manage the London-based staff and foundation that supports the peace and human rights work of the Elders, who include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former Irish President Mary Robinson.

Archbishop Tutu, Chairman of The Elders, said: "I am thrilled with Lesley-Anne's appointment and warmly welcome her to The Elders' family. She has an outstanding track record as a compassionate and visionary leader and we all look forward to working with her."

Dr Knight was one of the most senior women in Rome when she served as head of Caritas from 2007 to 2011 but her re-appointment for a second term was blocked by the Vatican.
