Backing for theologian Beattie15 December 2012
The Senate at the University of San Diego in California passed a resolution chastising President Mary Lyons for her decision to cancel a fellowship for theologian Tina Beattie.
The Senate, which consists of academic staff and deans, stated: "President Lyons' decision [is] incompatible with the principles of academic freedom and shared governance, and inconsistent with the mission of the university."
Dr Lyons cancelled the visiting fellowship of Professor Beattie - a director of The Tablet and head of the Digby Stuart Research Centre for Catholic Studies at Roehampton University - under pressure from donors and the conservative Cardinal Newman Society, which noted that Beattie had co-signed a letter in The Times stating that Catholics could support gay marriage.
