Women deacons advocate silenced13 December 2012
Deacon William Ditewig, a professor of theology at Santa Clara University, has been barred from speaking at Catholic institutions within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia because of his writings on the subject of female deacons. Ditewig was co-author of a book "Women Deacons: Past, Present, Future". He previously served at the US bishops' conference office for the diaconate.
The decision came from a seven-member panel that evaluates the suitability of speakers. The panel, which consists of six priests and a lay female theologian, stated that Ditewig "has publications ... in which he argues for women deacons based on a reading of historical data that is not in accord with the data of Tradition considered globally."
Ditewig said that the decision was made without any effort to contact him.
