Protests against snub to theologian

10 November 2012

Leading theologians have written to protest against the decision by an American Catholic university to rescind a visiting fellowship to Professor Tina Beattie.

The University of San Diego in California has cancelled a series of lectures due to be given by Professor Beattie because of her alleged public dissent from the Church's moral teachings.

Eamon Duffy, Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Cambridge and Dr Karen Kilby, a theologian at the University of Nottingham have both written to Dr Lyons in protest. Dr Gemma Simmonds, a lecturer at Heythrop College and vice president of the CTA, has also written to Dr Lyons to express her concern.

Earlier this year Professor Beattie, who holds a chair in Catholic Studies at the University of Roehampton, south-west London, signed a letter to The Times  which suggested that Catholics could support same-sex civil marriage.

Professor Beattie, a director of The Tablet, was due to give a series of lectures and seminars from 6 November until 8 December.
