‘One in 20 priests were abusers’, inquiry told

30 October 2012

A former priest has concluded that almost one in 20 priests is an abuser after conducting a study of historic records in the Australian state of Victoria.

Des Cahill, now Professor of Intercultural Studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, made the claim at the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into the handling of child abuse by Religious and other organisations.

He quoted statistics relating to priests who had studied at Corpus Christi College, the seminary for the five dioceses in Victoria and Tasmania, between 1940 and 1966. Fourteen of those 378 priests had been convicted of child sexual abuse, while another four had been acknowledged by the Church to be abusers. This represented a rate of 4.76 per cent, almost one in 20, said Professor Cahill.
