SSPX expels Williamson

24 October 2012

The Society of St Pius X (SSPX), which has been in reconciliation talks with Rome, has expelled Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson.

According to the communiqué published at the SSPX headquarters at Menzingen on 23 October, Williamson had increasingly distanced himself from the Society in recent years and "refused to show the respect and obedience which he owes to his rightful superiors".

The Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay, and his advisors gave Williamson a final warning on 4 October, the communiqué says, but Williamson responded by threatening to publish an open letter challenging Fellay to step down in his turn. The "painful" decision to expel Williamson had thus become necessary "for the sake of the Society's wellbeing", the communiqué states.
