Police lambast Victoria Church23 October 2012
Police in the Australian state of Victoria have accused the local Church of deliberately impeding investigations into child abuse and have recommended that it be prosecuted in some instances.
In its submission to a state parliamentary inquiry into the handling of child abuse by Religious and other organisations, police warned that more reports of alleged offences since the 1990s could be expected, given typical delays in reporting sex offences.
Police said recurring issues with the Church were dissuading victims of sexual crimes from reporting them to the authorities. These included a lack of engagement with police and the movement or protection of known or suspected offenders.
Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne said the Church supported the mandatory reporting of allegations of abuse to police.
