Cardinal berated ex-Irish president11 October 2012
The former president of Ireland has spoken of a "most dreadful encounter" she had with Cardinal Bernard Law, the former Archbishop of Boston, on a state visit to the United States in 1998 during which he questioned her credentials as president.
In an interview broadcast on RTÉ television, Mary McAleese recalled the prelate's criticism of her as "a very poor Catholic president" in front of Irish government ministers, ambassadors and Department of Foreign Affairs officials.
According to an earlier report in the Irish Independent, the cardinal berated Mrs McAleese for her support for women priests.
Cardinal Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in 2002 over his mishandling of clerical abusers and claims that he covered up sexual abuse.
