Greens ‘prioritise gay rights’26 September 2012
Bishop Joseph Devine of Motherwell has hit out at the Green Party, accusing it of "masquerading" as an environmental organisation to promote gay rights.
Referring to the case of Brighton councillor Christina Summers, a Christian who was expelled from the Green Party for her opposition to same-sex marriage, Bishop Devine accused the Greens of being "anti-religious" and "pro-gay", and likened the disciplining of Ms Summers to "the worst kind of totalitarian politics".
He criticised Scottish Green Party leader Patrick Harvie and said: "In Scotland there is a perception that its leader seems more determined to promote and champion the ‘gay' agenda rather than explain and contribute to the debate on environmental issues.
Draft gay marriage legislation for Scotland is expected to be published later this year.
