Anti-film rioters torch church26 September 2012
The President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has condemned an attack on a church in north-west Pakistan in retaliation for a US-made film mocking Muhammad as "reprehensible" and "un-Islamic".
He was speaking after a mob armed with guns and firebombs on Friday desecrated a Lutheran church in the town of Mardan and assaulted the pastor's teenage son.
The charity Release International said in last Friday's attack up to 1,500 people threw firebombs into the St Paul's church complex, burned religious books, desecrated the altar and scrawled "Allah is Great" on the church walls.
The Moderator of the Anglican Church of Pakistan, Bishop Samuel Azaraih, urged faith leaders to calm the furore sparked by the film.
