Latest NewsRivals eye Canterbury16 September 2012The bishops of London, Durham and Chelmsford are emerging as leading contenders in the race to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury. An announcement on the successor to Dr Rowan Williams, who steps down at the end of the year, is expected early next month. The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC), the committee charged with selecting the new Anglican leader, is due to hold its final meeting at the end of September. The Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, is considered to be a strong candidate and it is understood he has been interviewed by the CNC. The Bishop of Durham, Justin Welby, 56, is also in the running for the role. Bishop Stephen Cottrell, 53, is considered a contender because of his extensive work in evangelisation.
