Germans call for Christian unity12 September 2012
23 prominent Catholics and Protestants in Germany have published an appeal calling for church unity now. The appeal was initiated by the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert who is a committed Catholic. The Vice President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Thierse and the Minister of Education, Annette Schavan, who are also committed Catholics, are among the signatories.
In the appeal, which is entitled "Church Unity Now - One God, One Faith, One Church", the signatories say that Germany should no longer wait until church leaders agree on the theological issue.
But the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, Cardinal Kurt Koch, told the Austrian Catholic Press Agency that the appeal "underestimated the theological factors."
