Gay marriage ‘threat to Churches’

12 September 2012

Bishop Anthony Fisher of Parramatta has warned that there is every reason to think that same-sex marriage, if introduced in Australia or elsewhere, would come at a cost to religious liberty.

In a speech to the St Thomas More Forum in Canberra on 5 September, the Dominican prelate said enormous pressures would be brought to bear to teach children in Christian schools that same-sex marriages were the equal of "real" marriages and that homosexual acts were the equal of conjugal ones.

Christian organisations, he said, would be coerced to employ people in same-sex marriages and extend to them identical benefits to those in traditional marriages, to conduct same-sex weddings on church premises with church ministers and rites, and to offer children for adoption by same-sex couples.
