Cardinal’s tribute to Martini7 September 2012
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has paid tribute to the progressive Italian Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, who died on 31 August. Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor told The Tablet he had met Cardinal Martini, who served for 22 years as Archbishop of Milan, on a number of occasions. He praised Cardinal Martini as a "kind, zealous biblical scholar with a truly pastoral heart". However Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor said he did not agree with Cardinal Martini's comments - published by an Italian newspaper last weekend just after his death- that the Church was "200 years behind the times". "The Church is the Church through all ages," Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor said. "A lot has happened since 200 years ago, including the Second Vatican Council."
