VatiLeaks: ‘20 others involved'

5 September 2012

An Italian television programme this week sought to prove that Paolo Gabriele, the former papal butler set to go on trial later this autumn in the so-called "VatiLeaks" scandal, had admitted in February that he was not acting alone.

The programme on Monday replayed a video clip of a camouflaged man it claimed was Mr Gabriele. The man, described as a "Vatican mole" and whose face was hidden, said there were "some 20 or so other people" along with him who were leaking Vatican documents to journalists.

The voice in the replayed clip was no longer muffled, in an effort to prove it was that of Mr Gabriele who, in a written apology to Pope Benedict XVI last month, apparently admitted he was the man in the February broadcast.
