Imam arrested for framing girl

3 September 2012

A Pakistani imam has been detained by police on suspicion of trying to frame a young Christian girl arrested under the country's blasphemy laws.

Campaigners say Rimsha Masih, from Islamabad, is only 11 and has Down's Syndrome. Her arrest has been condemned by the Vatican and rights groups, who have repeatedly called for the blasphemy laws to be repealed.

Yesterday the imam, Khalid Jadoon Chishti, appeared briefly in court before he was sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand.

Police official Munir Hussain Jafri said a cleric had been taken into custody after witnesses reported he had torn pages from a Qu'ran and planted them in Rimsha's bag beside burned papers, Reuters reported.

The girl, who is illiterate, was arrested after some of her family's Muslim neighbours accused her of burning Islamic religious texts.
