Dolan prayer picks out middle line

3 September 2012

The American cardinal asked to pray at the Republican Convention last week highlighted the cause of unborn children, immigrants and the poor, and mentioned "solidarity" with those who suffer. Although critics had said that his attendance signalled an endorsement for the Republicans, in his prayer he highlighted issues on the Church's agenda as well as those on the Republicans'.

After praying for God's benediction "upon those yet to be born" he asked God to bless "those families that have come recently, to build a better future while weaving their lives into the rich tapestry of America."

Referring to Hurricane Isaac and other recent natural disasters, he prayed: "We ask for the grace to stand in solidarity with all those who suffer. May we strive to include your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free in the production and prosperity of a people so richly blessed."
