Murphy-O’Connor off to Bangladesh

21 August 2012

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor will represent Pope Benedict XVI on a visit to Bangladesh, the Church said today.

During his November visit the Cardinal, who turns 80 on Friday, will attend events marking the 125th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Dhaka and 400 years of Christianity in South Asia. He travelled to India as papal legate in 2011, to mark the Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II's visit.

The cardinal will celebrate his birthday with a Mass of thanksgiving in Westminster Cathedral on Friday 21 September. He will retain his titular church in Rome, the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, but will no longer be eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
