Pope voices confidence in embattled Bertone 4 July 2012
Pope Benedict XVI took the unusual step of publicly reaffirming his confidence in his Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, because of what he described as "unjust criticism levelled against" him.
"Having noted with sadness the unjust criticisms raised against you, I intend to renew my personal trust in you," the Pope wrote in a brief letter published by the Vatican today.
"I would like to express to you my profound recognition for your discreet closeness and your enlightened counsel, which I have found to be particularly helpful these past months," he added.
The publication of the letter follows the leaking of Vatican documents showing that a number of influential people had written to the Pope to complain about Cardinal Bertone's alleged mismanagement of the Roman Curia.
