Cuban dissidents praise cardinal12 June 2012
Members of the Cuban dissident group, the Women in White, said they have faith in the Cardinal-Archbishop of Havana, who has faced criticism for being too close to President Raul Castro, to help end state repression on the communist-run island.
Cardinal Jaime Ortega y Alamino met representatives of the group, who were denied a chance to meet Pope Benedict when he visited the island in March, for nearly four hours on 7 June.
Berta Soler, the group's spokeswoman, said they asked the cardinal to ask the ruling party to ask for "violence against the Women in White to diminish".
Soler added that the bridge between the Catholic Church and the Government "was valid."
"The cardinal was very receptive, and he listened to us," she said.
