Historic pilgrimage starts 17 April 2012
Hundreds of people have met in the historic German city of Trier for the start of the 500th anniversary of a Catholic pilgrimage, which this year has been extended to Protestants.
'We do not want to be isolated. We want to ask the Lord to guide us on the shared path of faith, to make it live again for us,' Pope Benedict wrote to local Bishop Stephan Ackermann for the inauguration of the Holy Robe pilgrimage which expresses devotion to the seamless tunic Christ wore before his death.
'The Church Fathers saw in this [the seamless robe] the unity of the Church, founded as one visible community by the love of Christ,' the Pope wrote.
The pilgrimage opened on 13 April and will last until 13 May.
