Walsingham becomes minor basilica

The Catholic shrine at Walsingham in north Norfolk has been granted minor basilica status by Pope Francis, writes Rose Gamble.

The rare designation, given by the Pope to places of worship with particular historical significance means pilgrims can now receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.

Mgr John Armitage, rector of the Shrine of Our Lady, welcomed the news.

Only three other locations in Britain have the status of minor basilica: Corpus Christi in Manchester, Downside Abbey in Somerset and St Chad’s Cathedral in Birmingham. Walsingham is the first to be given such status since 1941.
