Church of England evangelisation drive

The Church of England on Tuesday launched a nationwide evangelisation programme which seeks to teach people the basics of Christianity, writes Abigail Frymann.

The 48-part “Pilgrim” course was requested by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Williams of Oystermouth, two years ago, and is an initiative of the House of Bishops.

The course covers the Creeds, the Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer, as well as the Sacraments.

Lectio Divina, the Benedictine way of reading Scripture meditatively, is at the heart of the course and the Pilgrim materials also quote the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as early church figures such as Augustine, Irenaeus and Cyprian of Carthage, and the Church of England’s own Catechism, which the course’s authors want to see revived.

The Church of England said in a statement that the course demonstrated it was “addressing its commitment to spiritual and numerical growth”.

The eight six-session courses are for use across the country and are designed to be a “library of short courses” for priests to use with those interested in the faith and existing church members.
