The president’s somersaults on abortion policy have divided campaigners

To say there are mixed feelings across the US is an understatement. And yet, as Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life, puts it: “Right now, Democrats are their own worst enemies. We have 25 senators up for re-election in 2018. If Trump pushes even a mild pro-life agenda, and Democrats continue their strong pro-abortion messaging, there will be more seats in play than Democrats may think.”

While it looks on the surface as if Donald Trump’s victory was assisted by the pro-life movement, not all American social conservatives fit so easily into the obvious ideological categories. There is dissent even among pro-life Christians from the view that the incoming President’s disadvantages are outweighed by his support for their issues.
