Conflict was on everyone’s mind as Pope Francis flew into Krakow for the start of his five-day visit to Poland. Just hours before the World Youth Day officially opened, news had filtered through that an elderly priest had been killed while saying Mass in a suburb of Rouen, in Normandy. His murderers were two young men pledging allegiance to IS.
The brutal killing sent shockwaves through those attending the event – particularly among the 35,000 young pilgrims who had made their way to Poland from France. The Pope’s response to the news was this: “The world is at war, but is not a war of religions.”
