World Youth Day: A wake-up call to the young

World Youth Day

Conflict was on everyone’s mind as Pope Francis flew into Krakow for the start of his five-day visit to Poland. Just hours before the World Youth Day officially opened, news had filtered through that an elderly priest had been killed while saying Mass in a suburb of Rouen, in Normandy. His murderers were two young men pledging allegiance to IS.

The brutal killing sent shockwaves through those attending the event – particularly among the 35,000 young pilgrims who had made their way to Poland from France. The Pope’s response to the news was this: “The world is at war, but is not a war of religions.”

God Bless Pope Francis and God Bless Krakow. I saw many of the events on Catholic-TV here in the States and was amazed. I think one of the most impressive speeches was from the Syrian woman, Rand Mittri.....She has such courage and such dignity. I pray for her and all in Syria who suffer. May God help Syria. Pope Francis says we should not doubt where God is.........God exists in all of us and it is up to us to help through prayer and also to tell our countries leaders to stop arms trafficking and to stop the violence and to combat it as needed to create a lasting peace. Syria needs peace and her people suffer so. There are so many places in the world where people suffer. We must remember the past and have courage in the present and hope for the future. I also pray for Sudan. May St Josephine Bakhita pray for Sudan and intercede for all of Africa.

That seems to be the wisest choice for Pope Francis to take. Just by-pass the Polish Bishops and speak directly to the youth of the world. give them a copy of "Joy of Love" so they can read it for themselves.

"inspiring a generation of young people with a message of hope and mercy, and on trying to point an increasingly fractious world in the direction of dialogue and peace."

The tragedy of our modern world, confronting so many of the most profound threats to both humanity and the earth itself is best exemplified by the Popes recent visit to Poland. The 'vision' of a better better world is hardly the sole province of religion, but shares that territory with a whole range of secular, political activities. But what the Pope has is common with all who dream of a better world is that not one is offering anything that might be called a means to such ends. And while no one expects existing political process to offer miracles, when faith and fate look identical and talk of hope little more than sophistry, faith has very profound problem. "And what choices exist between any political, religious or intellectual tradition, when like a 'slow reckoning', the planet's very capacity to sustain existence is coming under threat? "And progress, modernity's central enlightenment theme burns less and less bright; the path of human development drifting inexorably towards its own self made hell! "
