‘Truth will make us free’

I watched the Hillsborough service, held at St George’s Hall in Liverpool after the inquest finished, on TV with a friend, writes Kevin T. Kelly. Mobility problems meant I was not able to attend.

It came over to me as something very sacred. God’s spirit was moving in that sacred space. “Moving” is the key word. It was not a static experience but a creative movement. The two words blazoned above St George’s Hall captured it beautifully - Truth, Justice. The truth had finally been revealed after years of pain, determination and courage by the families in the face of a concerted campaign to vilify the fans and blame them for the disaster.
As the Gospel says, “The truth will make us free.” There was certainly a great atmosphere of freedom and liberation in the service. Now the truth was publicly acknowledged, at long last the families felt free to focus on the issue of justice and to right the enormous injustice caused by the distortion of the truth.
