Come home to the Sunday roast


 
When the Wetherspoon pub chain announced recently that its 950-plus outlets would no longer serve Sunday lunch after tomorrow, there was a clamour to announce the End Of The Roast. Society is changing, Sunday is no longer a day for the family to gather round the table but to shop, flop on the sofa watching TV, be active or graze on a vague medley of dishes that call themselves brunch. If you love your roast beef, the pernicious invasion by brunch into otherwise good eateries is unwelcome. Recently my son and I went to have Sunday lunch in a favourite restaurant I had only visited before on a weekday. The waiter brought over a menu, announcing that only brunch was served at weekends.
