The public feels deceived by politicians and church leaders pressing an ‘open door’ policy The assaults on women in Cologne and other European cities on New Year’s Eve have confirmed the fears of many ordinary Germans and Austrians, who are in no way right-wingers, that they can no longer trust politicians, the police or the media, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt.
