The celebration of Christmas marks the incarnational nature of the Catholic faith. During Christmastide especially, the contemplation of it fills us with wonder at God’s presence in every aspect of our lives – working and eating, sleeping and walking, dancing and playing Tom, aged four, rushed into his grandma’s bedroom early one Christmas Eve morning, exclaiming with great excitement, “Marg, I can breathe! I can breathe! Watch me! Watch me!” Deep, noisy breaths, in and out. Then, “Can you breathe?” “Yes, Tom.” “Show me! Show me!” Unknowingly, perhaps, Tom had unwrapped the greatest present of all – the gift of his very self. Because ultimately, Christmas is about the wonder of creation, the blessing of breath, the g
