In the making of a television series that took him to various religious sites and festivals around the Mediterranean, the broadcaster found himself questioning his own religious faith
During Ramadan last summer a Muslim cab driver drove me home after a long night out. We spoke of the challenges of fasting, the situation in Syria and, probably, football. As I got out of the car he said, “God bless you, my friend.” “And God bless you too,” I replied. At that moment, 3am on a summer’s morning, it was powerfully clear to me that spiritually there wasn’t a piece of paper between us.
