The consensus achieved at the end of the Synod on the Family was hard fought and hard won, following bitter disputes. But the biggest triumph was the process itself and the space it gives Pope Francis to take action Whatever else occurs during this papacy, Pope Francis will surely be remembered for his brave, prophetic gestures.  His visit to the island of Lampedusa to mourn the loss of migrants’ lives at sea, the bold encyclical on climate change and the desire for a Church that serves others, symbolised by his washing the feet of prisoners and the marginalised each Maundy Thursday.  These courageous acts of public ministry have won him plaudits and huge popularity. What has been far more challenging for this Pope, however, has been in bringing about internal reform
