Gradual retreat


Once-thriving establishments have been shut

 
Sacred Heart Parish, Wimbledon, South-west London After almost 130 years, the order decided to pull out of running one of Britain’s largest parishes where thousands attend Mass each week. It was handed over to the Archdiocese of Southwark in 2014. Loyola Hall, Rainhill, Merseyside A retreat centre in a nineteenth-century building run by the order for 90 years; it was closed last year. It offered a range of courses in Ignatian spirituality and in 2009 the first lay director (a woman) was appointed. It also provided training for people to run their own Ignatian courses. De Nobili House, Southall, West London A centre for interfaith dialogue that was closed and the property sold in 2013.
