Obituary – Edward (Ed) Chambers

The leader of community organising in the US who inspired the creation of Citizens UK Ed Chambers was born in the Midwest of the United States, the son of Thomas and Hazella Chambers, Irish Catholics who had emigrated to America from the west Cork town of Skibbereen, where Chambers was to retire in 2010. Chambers started to train as a priest but spent much of his time urging his fellow students to lobby the cautious rector against the use of the Latin Mass and in favour of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. This was his first experience of “organising”, and it led to him being encouraged to follow another vocation.Chambers found his true vocation as a community organiser while volunteering with Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker movement in Harlem.
