Chianti comes of age

Ask anyone to name an Italian wine and Chianti will almost certainly be at the top of their list. Not only is it the best- known, but Chianti has been one of the main driving forces behind the exponential growth in Italian wine quality.Why has it taken so long? Italy never faltered in volume, but it always lagged behind in quality. Change came in the 1960s with new wine laws that dented the virtual anarchy of the Italian wine industry. Pressure for regulation came mainly from the increasing quality of Tuscan wines, the so-called Super Tuscans, produced in the Chianti region. Chianti covers a vast area of Tuscany and produces more wine meeting the strict DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) criteria than anywhere else in Italy.
