One of the most remarkable monks of his generation, Dom Philip Jebb, died on Pentecost Sunday. It is a day he would have liked, being the last day of the paschal season and the birthday of the Church.Dom Philip was the son of Rex Jebb, a schoolmaster, and his wife Eleanor, the daughter of Hilaire Belloc. His childhood was spent at King’s Land, Shipley, in West Sussex. It was shared with his grandfather in a house that lacked all mod cons but had its own private windmill. He retained an exceptional veneration for people and things that were old, sometimes very old.
