One of England’s biggest Catholic schools has introduced a prayer space to help children cope with the stress of exams. The school: Cardinal Newman is a co-educational voluntary-aided secondary school for students aged 11 to 18. It currently has 2,300 pupils, of whom 450 are sixth-formers. As the only Catholic secondary in the city of Brighton and Hove, Cardinal Newman is ethnically diverse – it has large Polish and Sudanese communities and 42 languages besides English are spoken. Students come from all economic backgrounds, although the percentage that receives the pupil premium is low. Could do better: In 2012, Ofsted inspectors said the school needed to step up the quality of its teaching. Its exam results have improved since then and the school now has a team of “lea
