Years of religious tolerance have given way to bitter conflict and ethnic cleansing in the Central African Republic. The Catholic Archbishop of Bangui and the country’s Chief Imam have worked tirelessly to bring about reconciliation but extremist forces are on the marchNot used to being on close terms with senior prelates, I wasn’t sure how to address the Archbishop of Bangui. From the start, the French speaker called me by the familiar tu. Maybe that’s episcopal custom. But accompanied by much ribbing and roars of laughter, it felt unexpectedly matey. In the end I stuck, cautiously, to vous and Monseigneur.
