The new Archbishop of Liverpool will be installed on the Feast of St Joseph the Worker at the city’s Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King. He told Christopher Lamb about his passion for social justice and concerns about the Government’s welfare reforms Pope Francis wants his bishops to be pastors not princes, ready to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. Malcolm McMahon, whom Francis named last Friday as the next Archbishop of Liverpool, appears to be a man in this mould. Before the 64-year-old Dominican entered religious life, he was an engineer who worked on the buses for London Transport in garage management and then in vehicle purchasing and contracting.
