The school: Cardinal Wiseman is a large co-educational secondary school in a deprived area of Coventry. It has 1,285 students, of whom 263 are sixth-formers. An above-average number of students are eligible for the pupil premium and have English as a second language.
Could do better: Ofsted inspected the school last December and said it had a number of serious weaknesses. Overall the school was deemed inadequate; pupil achievement was rated inadequate, and teaching, behaviour and leadership all required improvement. Low-level disruption to lessons meant that pupils were not progressing and more able students were not challenged. However, the inspectors did praise the school’s pastoral care.
