Setting about the annual marmalade making, there is a moment to consider sugar’s credible benefit. We forget about life before the refrigerator and freezer, when the only means of preserving fruit to obtain a supply of vitamin C in winter and spring was to make a conserve. So a little marmalade on toast for breakfast has a nutritional point. The debate about the evils of sugar arises often, but it is unrealistic to expect sugar to be banned or taxed like tobacco. Having said this, the makers of sugary (and fatty) processed food and drinks should definitely be reviewed for some sort of penalty, since no justifiable claim can be made for these products’ long-term value.
