Who are these new companions of mine? Every day for a fortnight now, they’ve escorted me along the bridle path, flying ahead in bursts before landing in the newly sown spring corn to watch me pass. Larger than a robin, with a glinting grey-blue back, an orangey breast, black wings and a dark mask bordered with white brushstroke stripes, wheatears are cartoon-cute.
