We were shifting soil. Ten wheelbarrow loads; 20; 30. After a long winter, the sun was warm and the work pleasant. Neither were we working alone. Each thrust of the shovel revealed a rich wriggle of earthworms. Humanity’s great benefactors, earthworms aerate the soil and, by processing decaying organic matter into rich humus, allow us to feed ourselves.
